Cycling around Lake Como is an experience not to be missed if this is your chosen sport or exercise. Despite the steeply rising mountain sides, the lake roads are flat and winding and follow the contours of the Lake. Weekends and especially Sundays are the days you will find the keen locals whipping around the Lake in the latest gear and on the latest bikes.

Many people drive to the lakes from continental Europe and can be seen with a a raft of cycles on the roof for the whole family. If you are coming by plane or train however we can organise for bike hire on your arrival. For the enthusiast there are also a number of local cycle clubs.

Cycling is a great way to see the Lake, but there are also more challenging routes that are made famous by International cycling events. First the "Giro de Lombardia" is a challenging ride of the official race route of the Giro del Lombardia, the final Classic on the pro calendar! A famous spot on this route is Madonna del Ghisallo, a cycling shrine, well worth the stop and the view. Follow this with another well known route from Bellagio to Bormio via the Passo di Gavia which is one of the most famous climbs in the Italian Alps, which will then take you down into the village of Bormio. Then there is the Passo dello Stelvio loop and a chance to ride the highest road in the Italian Alps with it's 48 switchbacks! Many circular routes are available that can take you out from the lake and back in a day and will expose you to both lakes and mountains with spectacular views and wonderful tucked away villages and hamlets.

Of course road racing or road touring are not everyone's cup of tea and something more leisurely maybe be needed. Mountain bikes are available to hire from our partners at Happy Holiday Homes in Menaggio and this is a great way to drift around the Lake. The word "Mountain Bike" however does conjure up more strenuous exercise and this is also available. We suggest you consult with our office on the Lake for more information on your arrival, they can advise where to go and when.....
