We enjoyed the house and had a lovely time at Lake Como.
We really enjoyed seeing the Lake Como area.
The house Croce Amore was excellent, exactly as it had been described and perfect for us. It was very comfortable and well equipped; we like to cook on holiday, which is perhaps unusual, but it was great to have a really well equipped kitchen.
In particular the location was even better than we had anticipated, we loved being high up above the lake and the views from the garden and the bedroom terraces are fantastic. Although the house has neighbours it felt very private and we were not disturbed whatsoever.
We did all the obvious things! We rented a motorboat on the lake (twice!) which we really liked; there was little “traffic” on the lake and it was very relaxing to tour around and look at all the villas and the other sights from the water. We took the ferry across the lake and walked round Varenna and Bellagio which are both very pretty and enjoyable to visit. We visited Como, although most of the town is modern and not interesting, the old part of the town and the duomo are really worth seeing and we took the funicular up to Brunate which is also really worthwhile. We visited Villa Balbianello and Villa Carlotta – we thought that in both cases, although they are very different, both the villa itself and the gardens are fantastic and must be seen.
Our highlights were:
- We hired racing bikes from Bici2000 in Lenno, they were great and we rode about 50km each day, up into the hills behind Menaggio, round the Val d’Intelvi, etc. Very strenuous (keen cyclists only), but extremely beautiful, and away from the lakeshore and the main routes, the roads are quiet and good to cycle.
- Our best meal was at Trattoria de Bracconieri at Brunate, just below the funicular station, we chose it because it had a terrace with awesome views over Como, but then the food was excellent as well.
- We discovered the Trombetta Express, the road train which runs all day between Menaggio and Lenno with numerous stops. It is by far the best way to travel along that stretch of lakeshore and visit Balbianello and Carlotta, you don’t have the stress of driving or parking and you can look at the scenery. You can get a day ticket and just hop on and off it really easily.
- We drove up to Breglia, behind Menaggio, just on the “off chance” to see what the views were like – we discovered that there is a big car park up there and a really beautiful 30 minute circular walk which goes to the Sanctuary above the village. It would be possible to do a variety of other walks. It is charmingly beautiful and the views of the lake and mountains from there are wonderful. It was a lovely surprise.
We enjoyed dealing with Happy Holiday Homes, including the staff in Menaggio, who were very helpful and friendly when we had questions. We would certainly use your company again.
Villa Croce Amore is a beautiful home.
Beautiful views and a great villa for entertaining. We took the ferry to Bellagio and had lunch at The Terrace, Hotel Florence and did some hiking at Varenna.
The Italian Lakes do have a postcard picture!
We stayed at Croce Amore in August this year and had a wonderful time. The villa was amazing, fully equipped and easy to find.
The view from the villa is stunning and we never got tired looking at it, any time of the day and night. All the fittings are 'top' quality and the kitchen is fully kitted out apart from the lack of drinking glasses.
The location of the villa is superb with many attractions easily accessible. It is also accessible to the nearest supermarket in Porlezza (which really should be highlighted more on the website as it is self catering accommodation).
The Happy Holiday staff were very, very helpful. We emailed them on numerous occasions for many reasons and were answered very quickly.
All in all, this was one of our most enjoyable holidays not just because of the excellent accomodation but the truly stunning location. The holiday ticked many boxes for adults and our children (who are eight and five).
We had an amazing week in Croce Amore. The house was much better than what was shown in the photos. The view from all sides has to be seen to be believed. It's not only the front where the lake is, we enjoyed the side views as well with the villages and the pre-alpine scenery. We also liked the left side of the house where a beautiful small forest lies. But the most important feature of all this rich environment is that the views change continuously as the day proceeds or the weather changes. So each moment, the same view looks different so that you have to sit and admire it again. We took hundreds of pictures of the same setting just to capture the weather and the time of the day. Unforgettable.
The house inside is as advertised but also full of air and light which can't be seen in a photograph. Very clean and looked after. It is very quiet, very private, although there are other houses nearby. The Jacuzzi and the incredible views kept us several days inside and we could not get enough of it. One week may be little time to fully enjoy the house and its surroundings.
In order to feel more of a home rather than a rented apartment, we would suggest that the kitchen should be somewhat better equipped. For example, seasonings and kitchen towels were definitely missing as well other things that a family kitchen usually includes and are hard to buy from a supermarket just for a week. The sound system and tv system directions and/or instructions must be revised asap. We couldn't fully utilise their potential during a whole week.
The lakecomohome team were wonderful from the beginning. They not only helped us pick the right house but they were constantly there for us during our stay and at the same time remained very tactful. They helped us with anything we requested, they even printed out some documents for us. They get an excellent degree from us for being both friendly and helpful.
We strongly advise forthcoming guests to rent a boat and go for a private ride in lake Como. That's an unforgettable experience. There are many things that cannot be seen any other way and many things to be discovered from inside the lake. The lakecomohome team can guide you to the details.
Lastly, Menaggio is itself beautiful and peaceful but there are many other places that pose as an attractive excursion or as a day's trip. Lake Lugano, Saint Moritz or even Stresa on lake Maggiore or the beautiful lake Orta might be interesting suggestions.
All in all, we feel extremely lucky to have stayed in this beautiful house, enjoyed the unobstructed views and had a great time for a week. We are not sure if we could discover this kind of accommodation on our own. It's quite difficult to hit bull's eye with the first attempt in a foreign place. That's why we also feel grateful to the lakecomohome stuff for their help over our final choice.
We recently stayed at Croce Amore as part of our honeymoon and wanted to say what a wonderful villa it is. We would be grateful if you could pass on our thanks to the owner, it is very apparent that they have put a lot of effort into making it a wonderful holiday home. The villa was very well equipped and, as you know, it has the most amazing view of the lake, simply stunning!!! We spent many an hour lazing in the hot tub admiring the beautiful scenery! Thank you to all the staff at HHH, you have been extremely helpful from start to finish and we will recommend you our friends.

We really enjoyed our stay in Croce Amore. What a beautiful and luxurious stay! First, the great view on all sides and then the beautiful spacious rooms in the house. The presence of the jacuzzi allows you easy one day at home can spend without your bored! As I think all the guests we were shocked at first but the steep driveway but eventually got used to do this. What has pleasantly surprised me was the space around the house through the woods on the other side. Furthermore, the house was thoroughly cleaned on arrival.
One of the great trips we did was of course the boat ride on Lake Como, Villa Carlotta! Also your team was very helpful. (And your help with the books in particular). Maybe it helps if you can give a map on arrival where the nearest facilities such as the bakery or a supermarket located. Also we asked ourselves if there's hiking in the area but here we were not got round to it.
In summary: we have a wonderful holiday in Croce Amore with (fortunately) well once again and will definitely return!
