The nearby town of Idrija is famous for its mercury mines (22 minutes) and Idrija lace museum (23 minutes). It is one of the few places in the world where mercury occurs in both its elemental liquid state and as cinnabar (mercury sulfide) ore. The subterranean shaft mine entrance known as Anthony's Shaft (Antonijev rov) is used today for tours of the upper levels and has life-sized depictions of workers who worked here over the ages. Together with the Spanish mine at Almadén, it has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2012.
Guests are also a short drive of not more than half an hour from the famed underground caves (Postojna Cave), Lipica Stud Farm or even the Slovenian capital Ljubljana with its lovely city center, central square, famous bridges, the castle and the river and some of the finest restaurants.
