We had a lovely holiday thank you with many happy memories and one or two very funny occasions like when John got stuck in the toilet in the hotel in Varenna! We did have a hire car as John is struggling more with his mobility so we were able to go all round the lake and round most of Lake Lugano too. We found the apartment quite easily once we realised we were looking for Domaso and as a driver, the access to and from the garage would challenge some drivers especially being able to turn round!
The best views are from the patio around the swimming pool.
We came to Lake Como to explore the area and did that to the best of our ability - certainly not being full season was ideal. We found Piona on our first full day which was so peaceful and quiet, with a lovely beach cafe, where the young man lent us plastic chairs to take to lakeside for John to sit and watch the world go by. We ate at Lui's in Domaso that evening which was lovely with views towards the snow capped mountains. We went to Lake Lugano on the 2nd day starting in Porlezzo where we had lunch on the waterside having walked through the local market and then drove round the lake through the mountains and crossed the bridge back through Lugano town, Switzerland and also visited the Lake Piano and its nature reserve. On our way home we found a lovely restaurant on the waterside at San Vito, north of Menaggio, which we returned to the following evening. Sunday was spent driving round Lake Como and we fell in love with Varenna - what a delightful place. We did lose John in the toilet as the door got stuck but he was released after a few minutes! We then continue around the whole lake, travelling through thunder, lightning and hailstones seeing Lecco, Bellaggio and Como.
On Monday we drove to Tirano where we caught a train on the Bernina Express up through the mountains, with some awesome views thoroughly enjoying the whole experience. When we arrived in St Moritz, we took a taxi and had a lovely lunch in Hauser Cafe eating rosti and two local cakes before returning and taking a panoramic view train back. Although the views are better with the bigger windows, the commentary was restricted as very little in English and less stops than the regular train we took up, so we did get the best of both worlds. Tuesday was a lazy day to catch up so we went up to Vercana and saw the views from higher in total peace. Having gone up as far as we could we returned to the SS340 and in Sorico, we were able to drive down to the waterside and we had our picnic on the unopen cafe tables and chairs whilst watching the world go by. Our last full day was spent in Menaggio and going on a boat trip around the central part of the lake so we saw Varenna from the water, then onto Bellaggio, Cadenabbia, Lenno and Tremezzo and back. We found it easier to do our own suppers the last couple of evenings so used the kitchen in the apartment, which was adequate.
We had a really great time and did things our way which suited us all, seeing and doing everything we had planned to do, so a relaxing time in the sunshine and warmth which was very much appreciated.
We would definitely recommend Lake Como to be visited and having been there, we would want to be in a quieter situation but it suited our purpose and we achieved our aims. I found you very easy to deal with, your patience and assistance were perfect and you had all the answers to some of my silly questions. I would certainly recommend you to anyone coming to the Lakes and I personally want to visit more of this area in due course so would come back to you. I would also recommend this time of year for visiting before it becomes too busy!!!
Many thanks for everything - if I find any particular good photos I will forward them to you.
Some feedback on our experiences:
• Booking process and excellent helpful staff at HHH both before and during holiday
• Modern apartment, generally well furnished - on-site parking is very useful
• Location is good – edge of town with ease of access
• Pretty good value for money
• Domaso is a great place (and maybe a little undersold on your website). Great range of restaurants and bars, fast ferry stop, good range of local walks in the surrounding area (3 Euro booklet available from Tourist info – left our copy in Apt.)
• Variable Wifi Ged Barlow
