The palette of the landscapes of Podstrana is truly remarkable: from the mountain peaks and the southern slopes of Perun, to the sea coast and aquatorium and the mouth and banks of the river Žrnovnica. The balmy Mediterranean climate and havens of tame, pristine nature are bound to make any tour or stay in Podstrana that you opt for truly unforgettable.
The entire coast of Podstrana is tame and suitable for swimming, and has been groomed as one long (6-kilometre) beach in almost its entire length.
The beaches located near larger accommodation facilities particularly stand out – for example, the excellent quality of the sea at the beach near Hotel Split has recently been officially confirmed by the international organisation GUWVA, which awarded it with a white flag – the only symbol in the world that guarantees a clean natural environment in order to protect its wildlife. This acknowledgment has placed Podstrana among the elite company of the dozen-or-so ˝green superstars˝ in Croatia, i.e. locations that have received this award.
Towards the northeast, Podstrana is fully sheltered by the slopes of Perun hill (Križ 533 m), which abound in the remains of Illyrian culture, the traces of pre-Slavic mythology and medieval chapels and graveyards that are commonly decorated with Antique fragments. An abundance of adventure and recreation is guaranteed by the numerous scenic walking and hiking trails that cover the hill, together with its many cycling trails, the climbing area on the southern rock of Veliki Perun and the mountain lodge. The flora and fauna of this small coastal massif is relatively well preserved and, together with the cultural and historical heritage of the area, creates a truly one-of-a-kind landscape.
The Žrnovnica river, whose short course terminates with its estuary in the sandy bay of Stobreč, marks the western border of the municipality. Its left bank and the relatively well-preserved river vegetation along it create a distinct landscape. The pebbled promenade (2 km in length) follows the riverbank from the estuary to Peta Perunova (the quarry).
As the tree boughs provide shade throughout the length of the promenade, it’s the perfect destination for taking a break and cooling off during the summer, or for some light jogging, cycling or a leisurely walk.
The animals and plants that live in the river and on its banks, together with the Snake Rock, a mythological souvenir from the days of old located between the promenade and road, all deserve our utmost attention and respect.
