Varenna is one of the most beautiful towns on the lake, its steep winding alleys lined with charming homes, flowering balconies and lace-curtained windows. In the evenings, the village is serene and picturesque. Truly a perfect place for relaxing. This is an understatement! The warmth of the locals combined with the perfect setting of the place, would melt the coldest hearts of the most demanding travellers.
Looking down on Varenna is the ancient Castle of Vezio; where Theodolinda, Queen of the Lombards, is said to have died in the 7th century. Today, you can enjoy Falconry displays, the tower which is accessible, thanks to a drawbridge and the underground passages dating back to the First World War. The panoramic views are fabulous from the castle & there is also a restaurant where you can enjoy local cuisine. There are also numerous well marked hiking paths around Castello Vezio.
Two famed villas to visit here are Villa Cipressi, with terraced gardens cascading right down to the shores, and Villa Monastero, a true showcase. A distinctive feature of Varenna is it's mild climate; olive & cypress trees abound as well as many other variety's of lush, tropical plants, typical if the lake. Varenna enjoys abundant sunshine & warmth right into the evening.
This old fishing village has several very interesting shops; from local butchers to craft shops and bars, as well as many restaurants ranging from simple but fabulous pizzerias and trattorias, to elegant dining experiences with lake views. Varenna offers excellent rail links to Milan & Venice! Plus there are ferry links to all the gorgeous villages & towns along Lake Como's shores; it makes a great base for exploring the area.
Skiing in the area is bountiful with resorts such as Madesimo 1.15 hours to the north and the local ski resorts of Piani di Bobbio & Pien della Betulla are only 40 - 50 minutes away. And for an exciting day trip any time of year, why not go on the beautiful drive, through the Alps, to the international jet-set resort of St. Moritz, only 1.5 hours by car.

We had a lovely time at the apartment. We easily found the apartment, as the directions were very clear. The apartment was furnished very comfortably, views were outstanding. The pool was a treat, all facilities were clean and well maintained.
We appreciate the information provided by your agency, you were very responsive.
The information we received in advance was very helpful. Any queries we had were also answered extremely promptly. We liked that we could choose our arrival and departure dates and that they were not confined to, for example, a specific 7 days running from a Saturday.
The apartment was great and well stocked / furnished. The four French windows and balconies were great and made the most of the incredible views. The apartment is in a truly excellent position to take advantage of the views of the lake, and the view never gets tiresome! It's fascinating to watch all the activity on the lake. We would have loved a garlic press and a larger baking tray in the kitchen, but those are small things. There were also only two large glasses, which if there was six adults staying (which the apartment has capacity for) would not be sufficient in my opinion.
There was some useful information and leaflets in the apartment. However we had to ring up HHH to find out that the advertised Sunday briefing from Danilo would not be taking place in the car park of Vista D'Oro apartments.
There was also some information about the local supermarket/s. We managed to get to Bellano on our first day. However there were traffic queues and it took much longer than the advertised 10 minutes. We later learned that there was an ongoing problem with the highway at Bellano and that people had been experiencing queues of up to one and a half hours. We were advised not to drive there again! The tourist office indicated that this problem would last for several months so it would be helpful to update the apartment information during that time. Furthermore a new supermarket had opened in Perledo (which I much preferred to the Bellano one in any event). It is easy to miss (as we did the first time), tucked away in the corner of a square. But the old food shop in Perledo has closed and the information in the apartment needs to be updated to reflect this, especially as we were not impressed by the food shops in Varenna. It would also be helpful to have some more information about good local bread / patisserie / speciality pasta shops etc. We happened upon the market in Lenno and bought some incredible olive bread on one of the stalls. A bit more "local" information like that would be great. (Other examples include: there is a nice promenade walk along the lake at Bellano; there is a "train" - the trombetta express - which you can catch from Menaggio to many of the sites on that side of the lake; there is an amazing ice cream shop in Lenno; oh and that there isn't a café at Villa Balbienello!).
We had a really wonderful stay at Maralena and would recommend the apartments and location. We really enjoyed being in Varenna and as I mentioned above, whenever we had a question or query HHH were very prompt at responding and were always helpful.
I just wanted to say how pleased we were with our stay at Vista d'Oro Maralena at Varenna earlier this month.
The information provided before we arrived was the best that I've ever had when booking accomodation. The directions were excellent. Although I can see why you endorse the ferry route (clearly the most impressive way to arrive), the longer route via Lecco is no hassle and a lot cheaper, plus it gives you plenty of opportunities to buy supplies in supermarkets (like the Auchan in Monza) en route. Harold's welcome email provided lots of excellent advice and information, and your on-line resources provided plenty of information and ideas on things to do. First class.
Vista d'Oro Maralena was very impressive. Very bright with it's four full length balcony windows, and stunning views over the lake towards Menaggio. Well furnished, and clearly quite new, the apartment was well equipped and comfortable. Thank you for the welcome parcel - the Prosecco was a nice touch. I guess if it had been our apartment we would have gone for a larger shower (given there was plenty of room in the bathroom), as it was all too easy to knock the shower valve as you showered, but that's a small quibble.
The entertainment equipment was very good too. The iPod/MP3/CD player, satellite TV, Xbox and DVD player were all put to good use. A big thank you to Karin who very kindly gave us the password for the WiFi hub which we detected. It made a big difference to us to be able to use our phones and iPads. The only difficulty we had was that the mains adapters we bought with us were all the round 2-pin variety, whereas the apartment uses three pin sockets. The two adapters in the flat weren't enough, and we bought a short flying lead adapter at the Media World in Lecco for charging our mobile devices. We left this behind in the flat for futiure guests. It might be worth mentioning the electric plugs in your information, although I'm not sure I've seen the necessary adapters on sale in the UK.
As mentioned by one of the previous guests, the little supermarket up the hill in Perledo is really useful and has some great produce, although it can be a bit hard to spot. It has it's own little underground car park and stair access if you know how to find it.
I know that you "market" your excursions quite hard in your information. For guests arriving in Varenna without a car they make good sense, although having to get over to Menaggio for them is a bit of a drawback.
Given that many will have their own or hired cars, some of the visits and attractions are easily driven to as well. In particular the drive through Sondrio and the Bernina pass to St.Moritz was stunning, and you can complete the loop back via Chiavenna which is equally scenic. A fantastic day touring.
One last small point. The key to the flat is not a perfect fit, and needs sensitive positioning to operate the lock. It also requires multiple turns to unlock. We were getting a bit worried when we first arrived, as initially we couldn't turn the key at all, and when we got it in the right position and turned it through one turn (with an audible clunk) the door still would not open. It might be worth warning future guests about it needing three turns, and getting a new key cut with a better fit.
Overall, a great holiday at a lovely location in an excellent apartment. The thunderstorm you laid on was very impressive, and we also appreciated the fireworks across the lake on two occasions.
Just wanted to drop you an e-mail to thank you for the most amazing holidy in the Maralena apartment at Vista D'or in Varenna. As you know, it was my son's wedding and I can honestly say that the superb apartment was the icing on the cake. Opening those doors to that stupendous view every morning was beyond words - the apartment was so clean and spacious and we wanted for nothing.
Thank you once again and we shall certainly be coming back to Varenna in the near future.
Our son an dhis wife planned a European trip for our 50th wedding anniversary. Saying here was part of the 'surprise' - what a wonderful experience!!

We travelled here with 70 guests for our son's wedding on 24/09/10 at the Villa Cipressi. 44 of our guests stayed here at Vista D'Oro and one and all agreed that it is a magical place. We were able to make Maralena the hub of wedding activity due to it's size, elegance & tranquility. Scott & Ashley had a wonderful wedding day and maralena will long remain in our hearts as the last night we had with Scott as a single man! Thank you so much for allowing us to have wonderful memories.

Our week spent in Maralena has been outstanding. We have loved Varenna, it's views, restaurants and it's rustic charm which we will remeber for many years to come. Our day trip to Como was very relaxing and interesting. The apartment exceeded expectations, it's comfort and facilities are second to none, providing magical views and a perfect retreat. We very much hope to return one day. Thank you & best wishes,

Our one month stay in Apt. Maralena has been absolutely wonderful, but sadly come to an end. We found the apartment spacious yet cosy and furnished simply but tastefully. The lounge/dining/kitchen area benefit from natural light through the large terrace windows/doors and the only way to describe the scenery beyond them is BREATHTAKING!! Apartment location is peaceful & the parking area ample. All in all we very much enjoyed our 'summer break' in Apt. Maralena on beautiful Lake Como and will most definately be back again!!

Happy to provide some feedback.
Firstly booking with you was probably the best on line booking experience we've ever had. The appartment we wanted wasn't available but your team sent me a list of alternative appartments that had clearly been well thought out and reflected our taste. This was very much appreciated and much better than some other companies who just send a list of everything available.
The actual booking with you was trouble free and the directions and local info you sent to us was excellent.
The appartment great and was just as the pictures on your web site. My son ( and I) loved the x-box with a choice of games. The views from the appartment were absolutely stunning. The newly opened pool was also great for a late afternoon dip.
Top days out - hire a self drive powerboat and feel like a millionaire for the day!
Varenna is a georgious little town and on the direct train line to Milan. The whole area is brilliant for a very relaxing holiday. I'll definately return to lake Como in a couple of years time and would have no hesitation in booking the same accomadation again through youselves. Thanks
